Interesting, I've constitute if a spectator stops they'll watch for about 5 minutes and if I can get them invested in a project upward to 15 minutes. That's a Loftier length of time though, 5-7 is a high average. Near folk slow down or terminate briefly and motion on. Kids flock. Since I stopped hauling my shop forge and use a brick pile forge I get a LOT more involvement. Spectators tin can wrap their heads around a: propane tank, reg, gauge, hose, some plumbing and a stack of bricks as something they might actually try. I'thou a long time fabricator so the shop forge I congenital is WAY more than anybody is likely to need, I've been using information technology more than than fifteen years and use mayhap %50 on occasion. Anyway, a fauna like my shop forge would toll a couple grand to take congenital and the farrier'due south propane forges are a few hundred. Most folk really just want to give it a effort nor invest in a career.
I prepare under an awning off the pickup'due south bed. Information technology gives me a handy place to lay steel, tools, etc. and keeps anyone from walking upward behind me. I have a steel table betwixt the anvil and audience, the vise blocks my right flank and I can motion folk back if they try. We don't get swamped, information technology's normally a pocket-sized steady menstruum. Like shooting fish in a barrel demo.
What I discovered makes a good demo is bringing a offset pupil and giving a lesson. You take to continue an eagle eye on them so they don't put a spectator in danger but it really helps tune their attention to safety. Information technology also has the educatee explaining what and why they're doing what they're doing, null will teach yous faster than instruction someone else. Seriously I've seen 2-three lesson's worth of progress in an afternoon at a demo. Information technology as well really gets the audition involved watching some doing things they're never done.
I'd Honey the opportunity to aid someone like your VOC teacher at a demo or heck anywhere. What a sweet day that must've been.
Next(?) time I'k down your way I'll take you up on painting the chimney, bricks are easy, a LOT easier than a person might think. There's a pull a fast one on you know.

Sounds like you are a not bad Demo'r.. God bless you.. Get-go few years I think I was a amend public demo'r only that changed..
At present..
I'm not a great general public demo'r.. I pick something to make and so set well-nigh doing it only like I'thousand in the shop and at the aforementioned footstep.. I'll answer questions when asked but don't do a verbal repose equally I work.. Not much of a talker.. More than a doer.. Besides that when I was younger I was extremely shy and you could say fifty-fifty withdrawn.. took, a lot of years of doing public speaking, pedagogy and such to get more than comfortable. Offset demo was in 1988 at twenty years old..
So my skill set now is adjusted for the action taking place. Education is a different thing totally vs demoing depending on the goal/activeness at hand.. I also notice that demoing for other metallic workers is so much dissimilar than demoing for the full general public...The level of conversation is at the trade level which if far more appealing to me.. . Also since I'1000 non much of a talker just after a few hours I tin can't talk since my throat isn't used to all the exercise so I'm usually hoarse.
I used to do well-nigh 8 to 10 demo's , 3 and 4 day venues a twelvemonth back when I was trying to promote business.. I used to discover them exhaustive and the aforementioned questions over and over again.. " practise you always get burnt" was the favorite and still is.. and the trailers weren't upward to the quality of this i..
Now it'due south different because I practise the demo's for fun simply only still know one speed.. "Strike when the atomic number 26 is hot"" Then the simply time I tiresome down my footstep is when educational activity and I'd never risk having a student demo at a general public event.. To many things can go wrong and if at a merchandise event people know the dangers vs in public..
Back in the early 90's I had a situation where I had cut off a nail similar object.. It was about 3" long and it flew 10ft straight equally an pointer, straight into someones leg right at human knee level..(back before I had a trailer and then all the equipment was on the ground) Stuck in really well for about i 2d as everybody looked in disbelief and fell out. Information technology was at black heat so it cauterized the wound right off.. But then the guy reached down and picked upward the hot metal and burnt his fingers.. That whole episode could have been the end of everything I had worked for.. Luckily I knew the guy/kid and he didn't actually care or at to the lowest degree that'due south what he said.. The next year he showed me his scar on his knee proudly.. The night before my best buddy and crazy striking dude ( he could striking a rate nigh 200bpm) with a 10lbs hammer he was standing back in the crowd and i had forge welded something.. Next thing you know he ended upwardly with flux in the eye and he was almost 20ft abroad.. Was about 9pm so information technology was nighttime out.. He had no idea what happened.. took to the ambulance for an eye washing.. (he never struck for me again)
I took both accidents very seriously..
Since then I've washed 100'due south of demo'due south and accept never had something fly off into the oversupply or someone unintentionally get hit with anything I accept been working with on blow..
Also after the first few years I built my beginning demo trailer which started the procedure of moving people dorsum from the line of fire.. and each trailer has moved the people dorsum a niggling farther.. As long as they tin can see and we can talk I'grand happy with the armor the trailer affords..
Anyway, I offer 2 levels of demo's.. Public (which is full general public, fairs, boondocks days. field days an such) and educational activity.. Actually I adopt the educational activity vs public but now I don't practise demo'southward for the business they create.. I practise them for the fun of it and also to brand stuff I ordinarily wouldn't make because I'thousand to busy otherwise..
Sadly about 20 years ago I stopped forging stuff to just forge stuff to but forging stuff when it'southward a paying task or something I need to make for other projects.. Demo's at present requite me opportunities to brand stuff and promote the business organisation merely in a I don't care mental attitude.. I don't blacksmith because I have to, to pay the bills like before when I was doing it professionally 24/seven.. I do information technology because information technology's part of me and really, actually enjoy it.. Took me a long time to come dorsum from beingness burnt out took off nearly x years as I had writers cake and no vision..
Anyhow I beloved to lookout people demo and your demo sounds like y'all put on one heck of a show.. I'd love to meet it in activeness.. Possibly inspire me to do something different.. So do you have any coming up?
My concluding one of the flavor is Sept 24th here in Boondocks.. Be the first demo where the trailer should be completely finished..
